REPORT ON NIGERIA
THE LESS REACHED PEOPLE IN NIGERIA.
The less reached people in Southern Zone (SW, SS and SE) of Nigeria are:
- The Muslim suburb (Sabongari) where northerners congregate. Very little prayer or evangelism has been directed to this area (Op. world, 2001).
- Muslims among southern peoples: About 25% of all Yoruba and some among the Igbos who became muslims through Muslim missionary efforts and enticement with money and favour (Op. world, 2001).
- The Niger Delta (SS) people in inaccessible swampy, riverine areas largely bypassed by missions (Op. world, 2001).
- Coastal area dwellers in Ondo, Ogun, Edo, and Delta States where the Christian presence is not deeply rooted.
- Benin border area and Cross River State where ethnic religions and secret societies are strong.
The less reached people in the Central Zone (North Central and FCT) of Nigeria are:
- Mada (105,000) in Plateau State , who are predominantly traditionalists.
- Geomai (278,000) in Plateau State who are norminally Catholic/traditionalist
- Ingwe (47,000) in Plateau State who are norminally Catholic/traditionalist
- Nupe along River Niger
- Kambari (75,000), traditionalists, some are now converted to Islam
- Gabari Yamma (40,000)
- Dukawa (97,000), traditionalists, some are now converted to Islam
- Busa (45,000)
- Kamaku (30,000)
The less reached people in the Northern Zone (NE and NW) of Nigeria are:
- Fulani (Fulbe), the black Africa 's largest unreached people cluster. Their origins were in Senegal but their greatest numbers are in Nigeria(12million out of 20million). They form both the strongly Muslim ruling class in Nigeria and the norminally Muslim nomadic cattle grazers over much of Nigeria and Sahel . 93% of Nigerian Fulani are Muslims.
- Hausa, known to be Muslims. About 30% while claiming to be Muslims, actually follow their traditional religions e.g. Maguzawa people. Few have been converted to Christianity.
- Kanuri of Bornu State have strong Muslims for at least 1000years. Only a few believers among them after many years of evangelism. A Kanuri church or key to the hearts of Kanuri is yet to be found.
- The Gwoza Hills (Adamawa and Borno). The area (with over 23 peoples) has become a spiritual battleground with peoples turning from paganism - some to Islam and others to Christ. Guduf (36,000) and Dughwede (42,000) and Marakam (4,000) are in the heart of this battle.
- The mountain regions in the east along the Cameroon border in Taraba and Adamawa States. This is the home of numerous peoples, some scarcely affected by the modern world. Over 50 peoples lived in the areas, many unreached. Mumuye (50,000), Chamba (150,000), Bata (50,000) and Koma (37,000) are witnessing a pioneering outreach.
